2 months ago at the SAR Council meeting the rep came and did a brief presentation. Looks pretty nifty. There was discussion of phasing out the MLU (an archaic system that is expensive to upkeep) and using the SPOT technology as a replacement. A lot more discussion is still needed, but this is a thought.
BTW ... the sar meetings are the 2nd Monday of every month ... all are invited and there is useful information shared (sometimes :-)

that would be pretty trick to set them up as rental units and have the "help me" message go straight to the sar coordinaters with a gps location.

It was also discussed at the last SAR meeting and many issues have come up. They will be discussing it further in a side committee. They are like a GPS and may not work in heavy tree's and it will only work under 2 inches of snow. We will keep you posted. I guess there are 2 other systems like this out there, but this seems like the cheapest one that actually works.
